March is National Reading Month and this week we want to share how important reading is for adults and senior citizens. Reading regularly can be the difference between a declining mind and a healthy one.
Reading provides an escape from everyday life, keeps minds active and engaged as we age and allows us to discover new worlds, ideas and concepts, all while improving our emotional response, critical thinking, sleep habits and stress levels.
Our brains need regular stimulation to stay sharp and alert. Reading requires our mind to recall and link different pieces of information which can take concentration and focus. This helps to improve memory and cognitive functioning.
Reducing stress helps adults lower their blood pressure, increase energy levels, improve symptoms from existing health conditions and lift their mood. Reading can be a distraction from worries and anxieties.
One of the greatest benefits of reading is its ability to ease the body and mind. Unlike television and other blue light activities, reading offers a calming atmosphere that can promote sleep. Improved sleep patterns have several benefits such as reduced risk of depression and Alzheimer’s.
It’s never too late for adults to start reading. Here are a couple of ways to help them pick up the habit.
Read with them, join a reading group or book club
Encourage reading for a few minutes a day
Choose topics that interest them
Try many options such as newspapers, magazines, audio books, graphic novels, non-fiction, etc.
