Grab a magazine, book or e-reader! It’s time to celebrate - March is National Reading Month. An entire month to focus on the importance of reading.
Reading allows everyone to be informed, stay in touch with others, learn about history and escape reality while enjoying great stories. Reading with others is a positive experience for all ages. Families can connect, bond and create happy memories while sharing fiction and non-fiction stories.
Most parents would agree that it is important to read to their young children. Sadly, studies show that, as children get older, their parents read less with them.
As your children grow older, it is important to continue to share stories with them as it can encourage them to share their thoughts and feelings with you. Here are some ways to share a love of reading with your older children:
Talk about the kind of books they like.
Share a variety of options including non-fiction, joke books, poems and fun facts.
Identify the fiction genres that are popular, e.g. fantasy, science fiction and sports stories.
Suggest graphic novels, manga material and other illustrated books.
Identify role models, including peers and celebrities, to promote reading.
Use online materials to encourage reading.
