The Pine Haven Council has become concerned that, throughout recent years, people who either do not understand how the town slash pile works or simply do not care have dumped items not allowed into the municipal slash pile when the public works shop is not attended.
Pine Haven's fire chief, who manages the annual burning of the debris, explained, "The idea behind the slash pile is so residents can keep their property trimmed up and clear of pine needles. It wasn't meant for large tree, stump, etc. People clearing lots and building need to find another option. Unfortunately, when people haul in stuff that can't be burned, the town has to haul it off at the town's expense."
Those who are not sure may drive onto the site and read the sign listing the acceptable items or call Pine Haven's town hall at 756-9807 during business hours for information.
This action risks the continued public utilization of this facility and, according to Mayor Karla Brandenburg, may incur a fine if violators are identified.
A camera was installed almost a year ago to help mitigate this abuse, but there are still occasional problems.
"We had someone dump a bunch of old furniture and junk on the town shop property this weekend," said the mayor on Monday.
She wants to reiterate the availability of the Moorcroft landfill for these types of items. Though the landfill does not accept household garbage, almost every other waste is received.
The facility is open by appointment Tuesday through Thursday and people are asked to call Moorcroft Town Hall at 756-3526 to schedule.
