Free Landfill Day

The question of another free day for area residents to haul and dump their construction and demolition (C&D) waste at the Moorcroft landfill was one of the items addressed at a special council meeting last Wednesday evening.

When asked for his recommendation, Moorcroft Public Works Director Cory Allison spoke candidly to an issue he is facing.

“I understand that we have a lot of people who want to put stuff in there, but I also added up our hours with three guys for two days – we spent 33 hours picking up garbage on Cleanup Day,” he said.

“Why are we giving a free one, when we’re in the negative so bad on it?”

Although this unanticipated cost to the town in addition to the lack of revenue has affected the department’s budget, the council asked for possible dates for the landfill to be open. The director was prepared for approval of the event and suggested a Saturday, from 8 a.m. until noon; the council agreed to give residents the free day within this time restriction on June 17.

Town residents who choose to take advantage of this opportunity are advised that they must show a current water bill and follow all restrictions on allowable items, including the certification of all freon-based appliances, ensuring those appliances no longer carry the toxic chemical. The certification is available at Town Hall.
