Town works to save Spring Clean Day

Council unwilling to lose popular event due to landfill closure

With the end of the municipal landfill, the Moorcroft Area Chamber of Commerce (MACC)-sponsored Spring Cleanup Day, which usually transpires in May, has been cancelled. Elaine Buckmiller attended last week’s council meeting to inform the governing body of the decision.

She was surprised when Mayor Ben Glenn and Public Works Director Cory Allison objected to the end of the town clean up day as so many look forward to that time to clean up their lot for the season. The mayor said to her, “I think we can still do it.”

Allison agreed, “If you want to do it, we can still take it to the landfill plus our contractor will bring big dumpsters for our clean up day for nothing. Either way, we could either do it in those dumpsters or we could still take it to the landfill as long as it isn’t household trash.”

Buckmiller admitted her disappointment in seeing the end of the annual event: “I hate to see it go – maybe because I’ve been involved in it forever, but, to me, it made a difference in the way the town looked.”

She verbalized a series of added issues that could affect the chamber’s decision to reinstate the event, but Glenn conveyed the town’s willingness to work with the chamber to continue the spring clean day, “If you guys are still game, I believe we’re still game to try to do some spring cleanup. I believe it does too and that’s why these landfill discussions were so tough because we want to make sure we can keep the opportunity to do that.”

With further discussion encouraged by council, the long-time volunteer agreed to return to the chamber and ask for reinstatement of the Spring Clean Day.

Council Dale Petersen reiterated a problem with which the town has been dealing since the closure of the landfill for house hold garbage: “People are under the impression that we aren’t taking anything. That’s not true, we just don’t take household garbage.”

The landfill is open for mattresses, chairs, couches, yard waste, wood and much more.

There is a list on the town website of everything allowed in the C&D pit and a hard copy at town hall.
