On Thursday, the Lady Wolves traveled to Torrington for the first round of the 3A Regional Basketball Tournament. Moorcroft’s first opponent was the Wheatland Lady Bulldogs.
The game got off to a slow start and, although the game was back and forth, neither team found much offense in the first half with Wheatland up, 14-6. The second half picked up offensively and the Lady Wolves found themselves down 18-17 to start the 4th quarter.
The last quarter was back and forth; the Lady Wolves had opportunities to take the lead in the last minute but came up short, falling 31-30. We struggled some on the offensive end to get our shots to fall, but our defense kept us in the game.
On Friday, the Lady Wolves found themselves having to win to keep advancing. Their opponent was the Rawlins Lady Outlaws.
It’s the first time we have seen Rawlins and good to get out against an opponent that we weren’t overly familiar with. The first half was again a challenge with both teams getting stops on the defensive end and not converting on the offensive end.
The first half was low scoring and found the Lady Outlaws with a 19-13 lead going into the half. The Lady Wolves found their offense in the second half and were able to string together good offense to win the game, 46-43.
I was really proud of how we responded in the second half. We just kept grinding and were able to find our offense. It was good to get the victory.
On Saturday, the Moorcroft Lady Wolves found themselves against a familiar opponent in the Newcastle Lady Doggies. The game started as the other two games in the tournament started, with good defense and limited offense.
Newcastle held a slim 9-7 lead after the first quarter. Newcastle extended their lead over the next three quarters and won the game, 60-19, to end the Lady Wolves’ season. We struggled with our offense all weekend, but it wasn’t for a lack of effort from the girls.
Overall, the Lady Wolves finished the season, 11-12. We knew moving up to 3A that there were going to be challenges and the team never backed down.
They showed up regardless of who we were playing and did their very best. We graduate five seniors, Kailee Gill, Talissa Fischbach, Madelyn Weeda, Kyan Meek and Camlyn Connally.
Their hard work and determination is why this group has had the success that it has. They were able to go to State three times with finishes of third and second.
Overall, this senior group of ladies has compiled 71 wins and 28 losses. They are really good basketball players and even better young ladies. They have been major contributors to the success of Moorcroft Lady Wolves Basketball.
