Wolves wrestling team bring home two champions

The Wolves wrestling team concluded their regular season competing against 21 teams at the Wyoming High School 2A state championship tournament this past weekend in Casper. Twenty-two qualified for the state tournament and the Wolves placed ten in the top six.

As a team, the boys placed second, had many placers and one state champion and the girls team had one state champion. Individual placers were:

Champion: 106 Dayne Humes pinned his way into the semifinals with a pin in 0:17 and 1:08, where he won by major decision, 9-0, to advance into the finals. There, he wrestled Landon Rhyne of Wind River and won by decision, 8-5. This is Dayne's second high school state championship.

Third Place: 126 Braydnn Terry made his way into the semifinals with a pin in 2:27 and a win by decision, 9-6. There, he had a great match, but lost by decision to move into the consolation semifinals, where he won by major decision, 13-5, to advance into the placings. There, he won by pin in 4:21 to place third. 220 Oliver Gorsuch pinned his way into the semifinals with pins in 1:06 and 1:59. There, he lost by fall to move into the consolation semifinals, where he won by pin in 1:24 to advance into the placings. There, he won with a pin in 1:46 to place third.

Fourth Place: 106 Kade Haynes made his way into the semifinals, where he lost by decision, 0-6, he came back to win his consolation semifinals by decision, 7-4 and advanced into the placings, where he lost to place fourth. 145 Trenton Sheehan pinned his way into the semifinals with pins in 3:54 and 5:18. There, he lost a close match by decision, 6-4, to move into the consolation semifinals, where he won by decision, 9-4, to advance into the placings, where he lost a close match by decision in sudden victory overtime, 6-4, to place fourth. 152 Christopher Boardman made his way into the semifinals with a pin in 1:37 and a win by decision, 10-5, where he lost by decision, 10-8. He won again in the consolation semifinals with a pin in 1:13 to advance into the placings, where he lost by decision, 10-4, to place fourth.

Fifth Place: 120 Kaden Haynes pinned his way into the semifinals with pins in 1:38 and 1:05. He lost there to move into the consolation semifinals, where he lost to move into the placing, where he won with a pin in 2:07 to place fifth. 160 Braizyn Humpal won his first round by decision, 6-0 and lost in the quarterfinals by decision. He came back to win his next two consolation rounds with pins in 1:49 and 4:09 to move him into the consolation semifinals, where he lost by decision, 7-0, to advance him into the placings. There, he won with a pin in 2:44 to take fifth place. 170 James Long made his way into the semifinals with a pin in 3:12 and by decision, 10-3. There, he lost by fall and lost again in the consolation semifinals by decision, 4-2, to move him into the placings, where he won with a pin in 1:40 to place fifth.

Sixth Place: 138 Richie Allison lost his first match by decision and worked his way all the way back into the placing rounds. He won his consolation matches with two pins in 1:31 and 2:41 and by decision, 9-4, to advance him into the consolation semifinals. There, he lost by decision in sudden victory overtime, 6-4, to move into the placings, where he lost by decision, 7-4, to place sixth.

Wrestlers who did not place, but contributed to the team's points were:

113 Weston Haskell went 1-2, winning his first match with a pin in 1:14 and scoring four team points; 113 Adam Cuthrell went 1-2, winning his first consolation round with a pin in 2:12; 120 Shane Hannah went 2-2; 126 Wyatt Pennington 1-2; 132 Cade Williams 1-2, scoring 4 team points; 132 Tucker Cook 0-2; 138 Trenten Gray went 1-2, having to medical forfeit out of the tournament; 145 Riley DeHaven 2-2, going out in the consolation round three; 152 Marcus James 0-2; 160 Spencer Cuthrell 0-2; 182 Wyatt Allred 1-2 and scored three team points; 195 Dane Connally went 2-2, going out one round from placing and scoring the team seven points.

As a team, the Wolves placed second with 171 team points to conclude their season.

For the girls state team, individual results were:

105 Daytona Hannah went 0-2; 110 Rebekah Anderson went 4-0, bringing home the first state championship win for the girls and scoring 28 team points; 120 Nadia Harding 1-2, winning her match by decision, 9-5 and scoring one point for the team; 125 Janika Baron 1-2; 145 Aurora Studie went 3-2, making it to the fourth consolation round and scoring four team points.
