Lady Wolves prepare for conference

On Tuesday, the Lady Wolves traveled to Newell, SD to take on the Lady Longhorns from Faith. We have seen Faith quite a few times over the years and we knew going in they would be a quality opponent.

The game got off to a quick start with both teams getting buckets. Faith led, 10-9 at the end of the first quarter and extended their lead, 28-18 going into the half.

We made some adjustments and talked about chipping away at the lead in the third quarter. The Wolves responded and found their offense and were able to cut the lead to 34-37 going into the fourth quarter.

The Longhorns turned it on offensively and won the game, 60-44. We really struggled with our offense in the game. We weren’t able to convert like we normally have been able to, but we know what we are capable of.

On Friday morning, the Lady Wolves Junior Varsity team took on Newell. The Wolves got out to a quick start before Newell was able to get back into the game.

Moorcroft got key defensive stops when they needed them and were able to pull out the 43-40 victory. Coach Hulm was pleased with his team’s performance and ability to get stops when they needed them and then convert on the offensive end.

Later that afternoon, it was the Lady Wolves Varsity’s turn to take on the Lady Irrigators from Newell. The Wolves got off to a slow start and found themselves down, 17-21 going into the half.

The team responded to that halftime discussion and stepped up their defense while holding the Irrigators to only four points in the third quarter while scoring 16 points to take a 33-25 lead into the last stanza.

The Wolves didn’t look back and won the game, 50-34. We were happy to get the victory, but knew that we were definitely a better team than we showed in the first half. We were still able to overcome and get the win.

On Saturday, the Lady Wolves played the Lady Bison from Hot Springs, SD in the West River Tournament Consolation Championship game at the Rapid City Civic Center. The Wolves came out ready to play and had a great first quarter that saw them leading, 21-4.

They slowed down some in the second quarter and took a 29-15 lead into the half. Hot Springs came back in the third quarter and outscored the Lady Wolves, 13-6, but the Wolves still led, 35-28 going into the fourth quarter.

Hot Springs got within three points of the Wolves, but Moorcroft finished the game with a 47-40 victory. We played a great first half and then our offense fell off some in the second half, but we pulled out the victory.

Overall, we really enjoy playing in the West River Tournament. It gives us the opportunity to see some really good South Dakota teams and helps get us ready for the conference games that start this week.

The Lady Wolves travel to Big Horn on Thursday and to Wright on Saturday to open up conference play. Come out and support your Moorcroft Wolves!
