A couple wins to start the season for the Lady Wolves

The Lady Wolves opened their season on the road at the Burns Tournament. Their first opponent out was the Lady Broncs from Burns.

Burns got out to a small lead to start the game, but the Wolves responded and found themselves ahead 21-18 going into the half; neither team was able to gain ground in the second half and Moorcroft was able to come out with the 55-52 victory.

It was a good game to start out the season. They have a great basketball environment in Burns and it was a good victory for us on the road.

The next day, the Lady Wolves squared off against Douglas. We knew going in that Douglas was a very good team; they are coming off of a state championship and have a good number of girls.

Douglas got out in front early outscoring the Wolves 29-7 in the first quarter. The Wolves were able to re-group in the second quarter but were unable to finish out the game. Douglas won, 87-51.

We got ourselves into a hole and had trouble fighting out of it. We made some mistakes that they were able to capitalize on.

On Saturday, the last day of the tournament, the Lady Wolves took on Lingle. The game was back and forth with the Wolves not able to gain much ground, but the team found themselves ahead 29-28 going into the half.

The Wolves used a strong fourth quarter to secure the 58-42 victory. We did what we needed to do in the fourth quarter.

We held them to 6 points while scoring 20. The defense really played well in that fourth quarter and that was the difference in the game.

The last game of the day found the Wolves against the Cyclones from Southeast. The game was very slow paced and the Cyclones led at the half, 21-12. The Lady Wolves battled back, but came up short, dropping the contest, 38-31.

We came out a little sluggish and, with their size, we didn’t get the tempo of the game where we wanted it.

Overall, it was a great tournament and good experience for us. This tournament gives us an opportunity to play opponents whom we normally wouldn’t see and the level of competition is also definitely a positive.

There are different things that we need to continue to build on and get better at. From a team standpoint, we have a great group of girls who are dedicated to Lady Wolves Basketball and who want to be here. They work extremely hard in practice, have good attitudes and compete.

The Lady Wolves travel to Glenrock on Friday and return home on Tuesday, December 21 to face Hulett. There will also be men’s and women’s alumni games.

Women’s Alumni game will begin at 5 p.m. followed by the girl’s varsity game at 5:45. The men’s alumni game will be around 7 p.m. and the boy’s varsity game will be at 7:45.

It should be a great night of basketball. Come out and support your Moorcroft Wolves!
