Question of the Week:

Would you rather the town tear down the MTC or leave it standing and why?

Kelly Perkins

I don't see that it's going to pay for itself any time soon so I honestly think that it needs to be torn down and reclaimed. As far as putting something back in there, there are a lot of options available. We do need a new cop shop [police department]; we do need something for the municipality; we also need stuff for the kids like a pool room or something that is entertainment based for them. I think we need to think of the community and not necessarily businesses; businesses do well down here [North Big Horn Avenue].

Char Delfino

I think the MTC building is an asset to our community and it would be nice to keep it. At one time, we had talked about turning part of it into senior housing; I think that would be a wonderful way to go with it if they could figure that out. At the beginning, we had gone over to Osage to see how they had turned their town center partially into housing and that was very interesting and neat, how they made that into little apartments so that they could keep their people in town.

Unless they have a reason to tear it down, I don't see why they should. If they wanted to add a pool or something, I get that, but we have the gym there, we have the senior center – the space is decently utilized. Not everything old has to be torn down and rebuilt. They've got the senior center which is great, maybe we could do a teen center and then, maybe, local crafts or mix retail to help some of the rent for the community side.

Michelle Hollinger

I think they should keep parts of it, the gym, for sure and the library and that section where the senior center is. The other part, if it's too much maintenance, I think they should tear it down, but I also wonder how they're going to afford to tear it down because that's going to cost a lot of money so that part is a problem also. I would really like an indoor swimming pool that would be my favorite thing to go in there; I think the whole community could use it – a lot of exercise right there by the gym and the weight room - all tied together. That would be awesome.

If it remains standing, they should make it more accessible for people to use if [someone] needs to rent a big area or something like that. If they tear it down, is it just going to be a wasted space like that over there [the area across from Diehl's on North Big Horn Avenue]? I would find something to do with it verses tearing it down and having just an empty lot. Use it verses waste it.

Rachel Kimsey

I think they should continue using it the way they're using it, renting out rooms. Maybe some other people can put some little gift shops in there. I think that would be something unique.

Penny Weast

I have mixed feelings about it, I think they ought to take it down and put a real rec center and pool there. It's an old building; it's costing the city a lot of money to run. I really think they could build a real rec center like they have in Gillette, maybe not so big, a pool and a place for the kids to run and with exercise equipment. I think they should tear it down and put a real rec center in there.

My grandparents have lived here since I was born and it's been there for years. We'd always drive through town and that was the main landmark. They could do a lot with that, a grocery store or an eye doctor's office or something.
