Moorcroft man Brandon Wells has been given a split sentence on a charge of theft after allegedly taking a vehicle in the early hours of the morning and driving it to Montana.
On November 29, 2020, a Moorcroft Police Officer was contacted by the owner of a stolen vehicle that had been recovered in Miles City, Montana by Montana Highway Patrol. The truck had been taken at around 2 a.m. the same morning from a property on West Converse Street.
The trooper reported that he had noticed the stolen vehicle and thought it was out of place. Calling the number on the truck, he spoke with the owner and discovered he was unaware the truck was missing.
At that time, the trooper allegedly saw Wells looking around other vehicles. He asked Wells if he knew about the truck; Wells allegedly replied that he had stolen it from Moorcroft and was looking for a plane ride.
Wells pled guilty to one felony count of theft. Judge John R. Perry gave him a split sentence through which he will serve between 40 and 80 months with all but one year suspended pending completion of three years of unsupervised probation.
