The community cleanup day has yet to be scheduled for this year, but preparations are being made including new criteria for accepting items with freon.
The council was asked at Monday night’s meeting if the landfill could accept these old appliances that retained the hazardous chemical within and simply hire out the removal.
Mayor Dick Claar advocated such a move:
“If it’s something that will keep refrigerators and freezers out of the borrow ditch, we can charge $50 and when we get 15 of them out there, we’ll just have somebody come and clean them out and put them on the junk pile.”
Councilman Ben Glenn added a condition to prevent those who would take unfair advantage of the allowance, saying, “They have to have a receipt and it has to be from the town hall. They can’t just show up out there and say they’re going to pay for it.”
This arrangement was found acceptable to the whole of the governing body. The actual date of the Spring Cleanup will be advertized at a later date.
