Wrestlers come home proud

Two Wolves crowned state champs

The Wolves wrestling team competed in the Wyoming High School State tournament last Thursday in Casper against 20 other 1A/2A schools from across the state. State was run as a one-day tournament this year, making for a long day of wrestling and tough competition.

The team came home with two champions, three placers and seventh place as a team. Individual results were:

106 – Wyatt Cook went 3-3 and placed 6th. He came out strong winning his first match with a pin in 1:19, lost in the quarterfinals, won the second and third round wrestle backs to put him in the consolation semifinals where he lost to move into the placings where he lost by fall to place sixth and score 13 points for the team.

106 – Cole Cantu went 1-2 and did not place. He lost his first round by fall moving him to the consolation side where he had a bye and then lost by no contest in the consolation round three.

113 – Sean Buckmiller went 4-0, placing first. He received a bye his first round, and won by injury default in the quarterfinals putting him into the semifinals where he won by pin in 0:29 to advance into the finals. There, he had an exciting match, beating the returning 2020 state champion from Southeast by pin in 5:33 to take the championship. Sean also scored 28 team points.

113 – Rebekah Anderson went 1-2 and did not place. She lost her first round by fall, had a bye in the consolation round one and lost by fall in the consolation round two to not place.

120 – Shane Hannah went 0-2 and did not place. He lost his first match by decision 11-4 and his second match by decision, 11-8 to not place.

126 – Trenton Sheehan went 4-2, placing 5th. He won his first match with a pin in 3:39, lost in the second round by decision, 8-4 to move into the consolations. There, he won with a pin in 1:44 and again with a pin in 0:49 to advance him into the consolation semifinals. There, he lost by fall to move him into the placings where he won by decision 4-0 to place fifth and score 15 team points.

126 – Richie Allison went 2-2 and did not place. He won his first match with a pin in 3:48 and lost in the quarterfinals by fall to move him into the consolations. There, he won with a pin in 2:57 and lost in the consolation round three by fall to put him one round out of placing.

132 – Jacob Anderson went 0-2 and did not place. He lost his first match by fall and his second match by decision, 5-2.

138 – Randy Peters went 0-2 and did not place. He lost his first match by tech fall and his second match by fall.

138 – Wyatt Allred went 0-2 and did not place. He lost his first match by fall and his second match by fall.

145 – Spencer Cuthrell went 0-2 and did not place. He lost his first match by fall and his second match by fall.

152 – James Long went 2-2 and did not place. He won his first round with a pin in 0:48 and lost in the quarterfinals by fall to move him into the consolations. There, he won with a pin in 2:26 and lost the next round by fall to put him out of the placings but still scored 7 points for the team.

160 – Sterling Norris went 1-2 and did not place. He lost his first match by fall but came back in the consolations to win his next match with a pin in 2:03. He lost in the consolation round three by fall to not place and scoring three points for the team.

170 – Hunter Garoutte went 5-1, placing third. He won his first match with a pin in 0:28 and lost in the quarterfinals by fall, to move into the consolation rounds. There he wrestled his way back into the placings by winning with a pin in 2:30 in round two and by decision 3-0 in round three to go into the consolation semifinals where he won by pin in 2:25 to advance him into the placings. There, he had a great match against Cokeville and won with a pin in 4:15 to place third and scoring 22 team points.

182 – Dekken Mayer went 4-0, placing first. He won his first match with a pin in 1:24 and his quarterfinals match by major decision 12-3 to move him into the semifinals. There, he won by major decision 12-0 to advance into the finals where he won a tough fought match to the very end by decision 4-2 to take the championship and score 26 team points.

285 – Isaiah Erickson went 1-2 and did not place. He lost his first match by injury defaulting, won his second match by pin in 1:48 and injury defaulting his third match. He scored 3 team points.

When asked about the season, Dekken Mayer replied, “It feels great to be able to put in all the hard work in the wrestling room to get my paycheck and the state championship. I love my PAW Patrol Team”.

This was the final season competition for the Wolves. Some will continue on to the post season wrestling by competing in the USA Jr. State tournament this Saturday in Sheridan wrestling both Freestyle and Greco. This tournament will qualify them for the cultural exchange tournament and the U.S. Marine Corps Junior National Championships in Fargo, ND.
