Police chief urges residents to lock their vehicles and remove valuable items
Over the last two months, three different vehicles have been stolen from Moorcroft. Each of these thefts was simplified by the actions of the owner.
Residents are leaving the keys in their cars and pickups like they’ve done for years, but, according to Moorcroft Police Chief Bill Bryant, “This isn’t the Moorcroft of years ago.” He advises, “Take your keys and valuables inside with you.”
The cars were eventually recovered, one from Rapid City, SD; another from Miles City, MT; and the third from Newcastle. Two of the three vehicles were stolen by the same individual, who was apprehended, but the perpetrator who abandoned the auto in Newcastle is still at large.
The chief warns people who may come onto someone trying to steal a vehicle (their own or a neighbor’s) not to walk into a potentially dangerous situation themselves.
“We’d rather they call 911 and let us handle it than risk getting hurt or worse,” he cautions.
