On Tuesday, the Lady Wolves traveled to Hot Springs to take on the Bison. Moorcroft got off to a good start and found themselves ahead, 16-8 at the end of the first quarter.
The game was back and forth in the second quarter, but found the Wolves ahead, 24-10 going into the half. It was much of the same in the second half and the Lady Wolves were able to come away with a 53-34 victory.
I thought we came out with good energy and were able to match their runs with shots of our own. They would make a run and we were able to go down and execute on the offensive end to get a good shot and convert.
On Friday morning, the junior varsity team got an opportunity to play the Newell Irrigators. Newell got off to a good start and went into the half with an eight-point lead.
The Lady Wolves didn’t quit and their effort picked up in the second half. Off of some great defensive stops and conversions on the offensive end, Moorcroft was able to get back into the game. The Wolves took the final lead in the fourth quarter and won the game, 42-38.
On Friday night, the varsity team traveled to Wall to take on Rapid City Christian. Rapid City Christian jumped out to a 22-11 first quarter lead and went into the half up 43-25. The Lady Wolves outscored the Comets in the third quarter, but were outscored in the fourth quarter and lost the game, 71-48.
We knew going into the game that they have some really good players. We got off to a slow start and that made it difficult to climb out of the hole that we found ourselves in.
I am always proud of our effort and no-quit attitude. We needed to make some adjustments on the defensive end and communicate better. It was a good team for us to play against.
The last game on Saturday found the Lady Wolves squaring off against the Newell Irrigators. We knew going into the game that they had a good guard and a couple of six foot posts that could cause issues if we didn’t keep them off of the boards.
Newell got off to a quick start before the Lady Wolves were able to regain their footing. Their size definitely caused some issues for us and we had a hard time not giving them second and third opportunities with their shots.
Newell led 34-14 at the half and won the game 60-40. We got off to a slow start and had to keep battling, which is what this team always does.
Overall, we saw some really good teams the last two days and that will only make us better as we begin conference play this week. We did some really good things on both the offensive and defensive end. We do have some areas that we need to improve on and with the way the girls come to practice each day, we will get those areas cleared up.
The Lady Wolves return to action on Thursday when they play in Big Horn and again on Saturday in Wright.
