11th Annual Heritage Round-Up

West Texas Trail Museum (WTTM), in conjunction with the Moorcroft Historical Society (MHS), held their 11th Annual Heritage Round Up at West Texas Trail Museum on Saturday, September 12. For my first Heritage Round Up, I think it was a notable victory and all proceeds will benefit your historical West Texas Trail Museum, keeping the heritage of Moorcroft and the surrounding area alive and meaningful.

It was a great night with kids of all ages – some who haven’t celebrated their first birthdays yet and some who are getting close to that triple digit!

The Heritage Round-Up kicked off at 5 p.m. with several activities to enjoy. There was a forging demonstration by Voy Cox, rope making by Monte Reichenberg, butter churning by Allison and Clara White, saddle cleaning by Charlene Huckins, wool spinning by Anita Shepherson and Dutch Oven demonstration by Monte Reichenberg, Hugh Jenkins, Mattie Mosteller and Alyssa Jenkins.

Besides all these activities, there was a silent auction. Of course, the strawberry rhubarb pie that Voy Cox made and donated was the highlight of the silent auction, but the fall gift basket from Hopper’s Beverage Emporium went for the most (that peach flavored bottle was highly sought after).

The mouth-watering supper was a colossal hit, serving about 100 people. Jim and Lane Mosteller barbecued boneless pork chops on a charcoal grill with sauce, cheesy potatoes, green salad and homemade buttermilk ranch dressing and, of course, we got to partake in the Dutch oven master pieces with Monte’s blueberry cake and Hugh’s fruit cobbler with ice cream.

JB King, a regular at the shindig, couldn’t attend this year (and he was missed) so Alyssa Jenkins and Mattie Mosteller stepped up and cooked his fry bread for us all to enjoy. Clara’s freshly made butter melted right into all the right places.

Monte also had his chuck wagon there to help with the cooking processes; if you needed it, Monte had it! The only thing missing was some live music, but with this crazy year our entertainment couldn’t make it.

If you couldn’t attend this year it isn’t too late to become a member of the historical society and support the West Texas Trail Museum. Membership forms can be picked up at the museum or call Cindy at 756-9300 and she can take your membership over the phone. New this year, we now accept Visa.

I am looking forward to 2021 and the 12th annual Heritage Round Up. If you have any suggestions or something you would like to see, please reach out to Cindy at the museum and let her know what you think.
