The Voice of the Community Since 1909, Serving Moorcroft and Pine Haven, Wyoming
The Moorcroft Interfaith Community (MIC) Food Pantry at 101 S Belle Fourche Ave., Moorcroft, continues to grow as the effects of the COVID-19 and layoffs in the coal, oil and gas industries and supporting businesses continues to affect the working public. In the month of June alone, the MIC pantry and the Wyoming Food Bank of the Rockies (WFBR) have worked together to provide food for over 1100 individuals in the county and surrounding.
“MIC was organized for the specific purpose of finding and meeting the emergency needs within our county,” says MIC President Monte Reichenberg.
“And we praise God every day for the fact that forward thinking individuals in our community got this entire process started before all of this (Corona Virus) got started so that we were in a great position to help out.”
The MIC hosts different types of pantries on each Thursday of the month.
The first and third Thursdays are regular MIC Food Pantry dates that run from 4-6 p.m. in the evening. In June, the two regular pantries reached a record 139 families representing 203 children (0-17), 239 adults (18-59) and 52 seniors (over 60) for a total of 494 individuals.
The WFBR Crook County Mobile Food Pantry, which is open to all families in Crook County as well as those in nearby Weston and Campbell Counties, also set a record for Moorcroft with 172 families coming in to receive food assistance. These families represented 233 children, 201 adults and 93 seniors for a total of 531 individuals.
On the Thursdays that do not have a regular mobile pantry, the MIC hosts Totes of Hope for Kids Grab and Go, which helps to fill the gap left when school ended and youth were no longer able to receive the free or reduced breakfasts and lunches at school, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.
In June, the lone Totes of Hope on June 25 reached 34 families representing 114 youth. Each youth is provided a grab bag which contains approximately seven meals plus snacks. In addition each family receives a 25-30 pound box of fresh produce.
The MIC feels very blessed for the grants, donations and in kind contributions that have helped them meet the increased need for food assistance. We appreciate the Moorcroft Town Center, Moorcroft Town Council, PreCorp Foundation, Diehl’s Supermarket, WFBR, Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, Wyoming Community Fund, Blakeman Propane and the congregations and individuals who have donated to the cause.
And we appreciate the many volunteers who have helped do the work. Together we are making a difference in our community.
Donations to the MIC Pantry may be mailed to MIC, P.O. Box 1056, Moorcroft, WY 82721. MIC is a 501c3 nonprofit organization.
