Today, the Moorcroft Interfaith Community (MIC) released the data for their May food pantries. Numbers were up substantially.
“Up until now,” says MIC president, Monte Reichenberg, “Our highest number of clients for one of our regular twice a month pantries was 49 families. But at our last regular pantry on May 21 we had 69 families attend.”
Reichenberg went on to explain that the 69 families represented 93 youth under 18, 93 adults 19-59 and 40 senior citizens 60; 226 individuals overall. And when you combine that with the 23 families at the first pantry on May 7, that raises the total to 92 families representing 135 children, 126 adults, and 50 seniors for a total of 311 people helped.
“Crook County has been identified as one of the most food insecure counties in the State of Wyoming,” Reichenberg noted. “And the MIC, along with many good partners is working to change that statistic. In fact, the last I checked, Crook County had moved from #1 most food insecure to #2. So our efforts are making a difference.”
The MIC also is working to help furnish food for youth in the area. “The local school was doing a great job of providing Grab and Go lunches for area youth,” says MIC VP Randy Blakeman. “But those meals stopped when school officially ended. As a result, the MIC has hosted a Totes of Hope Grab and Go for students on Thursday, May 28 to help take up the slack.”
According to Reichenberg, the Totes of Hope Grab and Go on the 28th provided over 1000 meals for area youth. The next Totes of Hope Grab and Go will be on Thursday, June 25, 2020 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Moorcroft Town Center kitchen door. Parents and grandparents may pick up the food and it is not required that each youth be present.
In addition to food pantries on the first and third Thursdays of each month, the MIC also hosts a monthly Wyoming Food Bank of the Rockies (WFBR) Mobile Food Pantry which is open to everyone in Crook County as well as the nearby areas of Rozet and Upton.
“We are having great responses to our Mobile Pantries, “says MIC Treasurer Walt Campbell. “And we are very fortunate to have so many great donors stepping up to support the MIC efforts at providing food during these uncertain times.”
The MIC would like to thank, all of our many volunteers who help us do the work. And a great big thank you to Diehl’s Supermarket, PreCorp Foundation, Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, Wyoming Community Fund, Wyoming Food Bank of the Rockies and the Salvation Army of Gillette for the grants and food assistance that has made all of this possible.
