Filing dates open for this year's election candidates

For those looking to perform their civic duty by serving at the various levels of Wyoming’s government, filing dates open this week for this year’s elections. Over the next two weeks, citizens are invited to put forth their names for seats ranging from the U.S. Legislature to city council.

File your application for federal and state offices, including the Wyoming State Legislature, with the Office of the Secretary of State. This year, Crook County’s state representative seat (currently held by Tyler Lindholm) will be elected for a two-year term, as well as a six-year term for one U.S. Senator (to occupy the seat currently filled by Mike Enzi, who will be retiring) and a two-year term for Wyoming’s U.S. Representative (the seat occupied at present by Liz Cheney).

Applications for these offices can be located on the Secretary of State’s website at sos.wyo.gov.

At the county level, one county commissioner seat with a four-year term will be voted on this year (currently held by Kelly Dennis). Committeemen and women will also be elected for every county precinct for two-year terms.

Application forms for these seats will be available on the county website when filing dates open. Though the courthouse doors are still locked due to the ongoing pandemic, County Clerk Linda Fritz assures candidates that they can still come to the front door to submit their application if they would prefer to do so in person.

Two four-year city council member terms will be voted on this year for three county towns. In Sundance, Jana McLean and Joe Wilson’s seats are up for re-election; in Moorcroft, Owen Mathews and Ben Glenn’s seats are up for re-election; and in Pine Haven, the seats to be voted on are currently occupied by John Cook and Karla Brandenburg. Candidates should contact city hall for the council they wish to run for.

In Sundance, Clerk Treasurer Kathy Lenz asks that candidates call her at 283-3451 to schedule an appointment so she can walk you through the process.

Filing dates open on May 14 and continue until May 29 for all seats mentioned above.

Please note that county boards will not appear on the primary ballot and will instead be voted on at the general election; filing dates for the school board, hospital district, museum district, senior services district and conservation district will be from August 5 to 24.

This year’s primary election is scheduled for August 18 and the general election for November 3.
