The Lady Wolves traveled to Burns for the Burns Winter Classic over the weekend. On Thursday, the Wolves played the home team, Burns Broncs.
Moorcroft got out to an early lead and ended the first quarter 10-1 and the half up 22-11. The Broncs closed the gap in the fourth quarter but the Wolves were able to continue their pace and win the game, 46-38.
I thought we came out exactly how we wanted to. We played great team defense and executed on offense. We faced some adversity in the fourth quarter, but we had numerous different kids step up and it was a complete team effort.
The Friday morning game saw Moorcroft face off against Pine Bluffs. Moorcroft and Pine Bluffs were close after the first quarter, but saw the Hornets pull away by halftime.
The Wolves did not quit and were able to cut the lead to seven in the fourth quarter before they had to start fouling at the end. Pine Bluffs won the game, 47-32. We had our chances in the third and fourth quarter, but we had some mistakes that we needed to clean up. I thought our effort was good.
Friday afternoon, the Wolves played Wheatland. I was concerned about our stamina going into the game and at times, it really showed.
Wheatland led at half, 32-30 before winning the game, 59-42. I was pleased with how well we played in the first half and the things we were doing. I thought in the second half, we ran out of gas a little bit and that was the difference in the game.
The final game on Saturday found the Lady Wolves taking on Lingle-Ft. Laramie. The team got out to a fast start and never looked back. The Lady Wolves won the game, 63-19. Our defensive pressure led to offensive opportunities and we did a really good job of converting on the offensive end. I thought we played really well and the game reflected that.
The junior varsity played three games on the weekend and won all three. They played Burns, Little Snake River and Lingle-Ft. Laramie. It was a good test for them and they were able to gain a good amount of experience that will help carry them on as we get into more games. I was really proud of their effort and how they play together as a team.
Overall, it was a good weekend and tournament to be in. We had the opportunity to play two 3A schools, the number 1 2A school and an up-and-coming team. The competition was great and there are some positives that we will continue to build on and some corrections that we need to make in practice.
All of the girls played good minutes. It is positive to see the girls working together as a team and the cohesiveness that this group has. They enjoy being around each other and they put the team above everything else.
