The Voice of the Community Since 1909, Serving Moorcroft and Pine Haven, Wyoming
Last Thursday, the Moorcroft High School (MHS) student body and staff celebrated a year’s worth of hard work and accomplishment with drinks and snacks in the building’s common area.
The Wyoming Department of Education has shared the results of their examination of students’ overall performance in schools throughout the state and, while all of Crook County scored well, MHS scored highest, exceeding the state average and expectations.
While the determining scores are based to some extent on ACT and WY-TOPP scores, the department also examines other aspects, such as individual kids who score higher this year than last and graduation rate, among other things.
According to Crook County Superintendent Mark Broderson, “It’s hard to put your finger on it with the way they measure this, because it’s not just based on your test scores.”
This is a significant accomplishment because last year, the first year of this type of performance testing, MHS showed poorly in several grades, scoring below state average.
But with a concentrated effort from students and teachers, this year has seen outstanding growth.
“I think it’s amazing!” teacher Melissa Buckmiller extolled the MHS students.
“I knew we could do it and it’s something that the kids have been working really hard to do and I think we can do it again next year, too.”
