The Yard of the Month for September has been chosen by the Pine Haven Beautification Alliance. Our recipients this month are Don and Michelle Lancaster and their little feisty Chihuahua, Giovani, at 4 Cottonwood Street.
Don is now the Assistant Chief of the Pine Haven Fire Department and his wife, Michelle, is retired. Between the two, they have two boys and two girls, all living fairly close in Buffalo, Sheridan, Spearfish and Sioux Falls.
Both are retired from the U.S. Forest Service and have been together since 2003; they met when they fought fires together, retiring in 2013.
It was fascinating talking with them about their experiences as fire fighters. They have traveled all over the US doing just that. They even showed us their certificates of contribution to the retrieval/recovery of the space shuttle Columbia in 2003.
They bought the home of Jim and Carmine Diehl, the previous owners of Paradise Foods, in 2017. They loved the area and live right across from the golf course with a view of the lake. Michelle says she loves watching the lake in the evenings; it’s so peaceful.
They have a lot of Canadian Cherry Trees and hanging baskets of flowers off their deck/porch. When they moved to this place, it had lots of juniper bushes. They tore them down because of the smell when they got wet so now they are putting in a fire pit area.
Don told us he is making the platform out of blocks he got from the original Main Street in Deadwood when they reconstructed it.
Once again we want to congratulate Don and Michelle Lancaster and say “keep up the good work”. Please drive by, down the road between their house and golf course so you can see the front yard and see how nice it looks. We also want to commend everyone in Pine Haven for taking time to make all their yards look better so that we can be proud of our community.
