The Voice of the Community Since 1909, Serving Moorcroft and Pine Haven, Wyoming
Oh my! Those crazy pink flamingos are back in Moorcroft and this time they are working for one of Moorcroft’s own Girl Scouts, Lindsey Gray.
Fifteen-year-old Lindsey has been a Girl Scout since she was old enough to join and, last year, applied for and was accepted by the Girl Scouts of America to travel to Greece, Spain and Italy with other representatives from the U.S.
This year she applied to go to Costa Rica and was again accepted. To facilitate the funding for this trip, she is making use of the fanciful flock. The gangling pink assemblage started their reign of heart-palpitating blackmail this year on the front lawn of the First Presbyterian Church Sunday morning and was soon sent on to set in a private yard in Texas Trails Subdivision east of town.
One gives an address and $10 to move the birds on and the flock moves to the next victim…we mean participant; yes, participant.
The group leaves December 26 and returns January 5, 2020. While in Costa Rica, Lindsey said that she will be doing 12 hours of community service and will participate in a sea turtle retreat where she helps protect baby sea turtles as they hatch and make their dash to the water amidst many predators.
The organization only accepted 50 girls for this trip and among those criteria was a letter explaining her reason for applying – this, in part, is what she wrote:
“I want to take this opportunity because I had an amazing trip last year and I think this will be another great opportunity. I will be traveling with all different girls who I’m sure I can get along with and learning a new language and new abilities to communicate are skills that I have.” Lindsey has started learning basic Spanish and will continue to develop her second tongue as she works toward her goal.
Lindsey’s plan is to make around $3500 before December for her trip. Along with the flamingos, she is offering to sew baby blankets by order; she offers receiving, “ribbon” and “crinkle” type blankets. Those interested in the blankets or in cash donations without the pink plastic invasion, may send requests and donations to P. O. Box 172, Moorcroft, WY 82721.
