Moorcroft School K-4th Grade Read-A-Thon

Camlyn Connally, an eighth grade student and FCCLA member in Moorcroft, has focused her project this year around literacy in kindergarten through fourth grade. In partnership with Carol Mead and the Wyoming First book project, as well as Amber Burch with Usborne Books & More, she set up a Read-A-Thon competition to teach younger students in her community about the importance of literacy.

Students asked for pledges around the community in exchange for reading 300 minutes in 2 weeks' time. These pledges went toward books for both the students' homes, as well as their classrooms.

Over $1600 was raised, which brought over 300 books into the school and community. Over 15,000 total minutes read were reported over the course of the two weeks.

There were 36 kids who participated and, of these, the top six students were rewarded for reading the most minutes. In addition, Mrs. Burch's and Mrs. Lovett's classes were rewarded with additional books for reporting the most minutes.

Camlyn will take this project to the State FCCLA Convention on March 26 to compete against others who are focusing their projects around children. If placed in the top three best projects at the State Convention, Camlyn will have the opportunity to attend the National FCCLA Conference held in Anaheim, California this summer.
