Campbell County finally succeeds in getting federal grant for industrial park GILLETTE (WNE) — If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again. And again. And again. After numerous failed attempts at getting funding for an industrial park, Campbell County was finally successful this week, when it was awarded a $2.8 million federal grant to help build an industrial park east of Cam-plex. The grant is from the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Association, specifically from a program designed to help coal communities. Public Works...

  • UW shifts tuition model, hikes prices

Abby Vander Graaff, Laramie Boomerang Via Wyoming News Exchange|Sep 22, 2022

LARAMIE — The way University of Wyoming students and administrators approach tuition will change next year. The UW Board of Trustees gave the green light for two recommendations from administrators Thursday: increase tuition by 4% and transition to a block tuition model starting in the 2023-24 school year. While students now pay tuition per credit hour they take, a block tuition model will introduce a lump sum students pay regardless of the number of credits. Block tuition rates will be the norm for any undergraduate student taking 12-18 credit...

    Grace Moore|Sep 15, 2022

Unless revisited by a future council, this compromise will be in effect until such time that a future water project incorporates adding meters to the individual trailer sites for all parks within the municipal area, making them all equal. The Ellis Mobile Home Park will be responsible for each ind...

  • Big Horn property finally sells

    Grace Moore|Sep 15, 2022

Moorcroft has sold the North Big Horn property. The town has owned the empty commercial property north of the Texas Trail Museum for more than a decade and has been trying to sell it almost as long. Due to restrictions, though, there have been no bids on said land when advertised. These numerous restrictions will follow the property through any future sales. "That's probably one of the reasons it's taken forever, because there are a lot of restrictions on it," Councilman Dale Petersen explained...

    Grace Moore|Sep 15, 2022

At approximately 8:45 a.m. on Saturday, the Moorcroft and Pine Haven Volunteer Fire Departments were called out to a structure fire reported at 312 North Yellowstone. According to long-time firefighter Fred Devish, a compromised stove pipe traveling up through the structural chimney from a wood burning stove was the culprit. The fire subsequently moved from the chimney into "a little bit of the roof materials", necessitating the fire crews to soak the space between the outer and inner layers of...

  • Wyoming places undergo name changes; Federal effort looks to remove slur aimed at Indigenous women

Ellen Gerst, Casper Star-Tribune Via Wyoming News Exchange|Sep 15, 2022

CASPER — More than 40 Wyoming places now have new names, after a federal effort to remove a slur aimed at Indigenous women from federal landmarks. The term “squaw” has historically been used, often derogatorily, as an ethnic and sexist slur. The Department of the Interior, under the leadership of Laguna Pueblo member Secretary Deb Haaland, issued an order last year calling for more than 650 public places in the United States that use the term to be renamed. The department also replaced the term with “sq___” in official communica...

  • Mine plans spur concern

    Grace Moore|Sep 8, 2022

Black Hills Bentonite LLC of Casper, WY has asked for a permit to mine bentonite a couple miles south of Pine Haven. At last week's public meeting of Pine Haven Council, residents and Land Quality Division of the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) representatives entertained approximately 60 guests from Pine Haven and the surrounding area to discuss concerns about the mining process. Mayor Karla Brandenburg later noted, "All who spoke objected to the mine being built in the area it is...

  • Delayed, not abandoned

    Grace Moore|Sep 8, 2022

Pine Haven’s town council plans to apply for a Business Ready Grant in the new year to enable the town to build the infrastructure for a business park and subsequent fire hall. According to Mayor Karla Brandenburg, along with this main funding they are actively seeking “other avenues for grants for this project”. The Wyoming Business Council’s Business Ready Grant has specific prerequisites, though, one of which is the donation of the land that will hold the infrastructure and on which the structures are to be built. The present land owners...

  • County gains new voters

    Sarah Pridgeon|Sep 8, 2022

The number of registered voters in Crook County took a significant leap upwards this year, according to the official tallies from August’s primary election. Crook County had 4103 registered voters in total at the 2018 primary, a number that grew only modestly to 4143 by the 2020 general election. This year, on the other hand, 4558 people were registered to vote in the county on election day – an increase of 415 people, or 10%. On election day itself, Crook County gained 205 new voters. Unsurprisingly, the number of ballots that were cast for...

Saturday's Pine Haven Days Parade was a great hit with 26 entries, including Grand Marshals Bruce and Linda Lang, who have lived in the Pine Haven area since 1981, a couple of years before the town was incorporated. As the procession lined out, bags were open and contestants were hydrated and slathered with sunscreen as they prepared for the candy haul...

  • Council cuts back on meetings

    Grace Moore|Sep 1, 2022

After many years conducting the town’s business in two monthly meetings to comfortably get all agenda items covered, Moorcroft’s council is considering returning to one meeting a month in an effort to lessen costs. Mayor Ben Glenn opened the discussion: “We’ve batted around going to one meeting a month again, does anybody have any thoughts on that?” “One of the reasons we went to two is because of how long they were,” Councilman Dale Petersen remembered. “We don’t want to have 11-12 p.m. meetings [but] I’m good with trying it and if it doesn...

  • Costs set to rise due to landfill closure

    Grace Moore|Sep 1, 2022

Consequences of the closure of the municipal landfill are beginning to be felt and are following the long-held predictions of Moorcroft Mayor Ben Glenn, former mayor Dick Claar and many others who dreaded the inevitable rise in costs under the auspices of outside facilitators. “We’re trucking to Gillette now so I think we have to look at our commercial rates,” Glenn reported at the last council meeting. “For years they have been too low, but we got away with it because our landfill [rates] was at $60 a ton. We are now paying $80 a ton at Gill...

  • Write-in candidates to fill out general election ballot

    Sarah Pridgeon|Sep 1, 2022

A number of gaps on this year’s municipal ballots will be filled with write-in candidates at this year’s general election. Following the primary, any eligible person who received at least three write-in nominations was given the opportunity to place themselves in the running. In Sundance, a write-in spot was available for one of the two council seats that will be elected in November. However, says County Clerk Melissa Jones, no individual received three write-ins, so the ballot will not change. In Sundance, the candidates for the two seats wil...
