  • MTC grant no longer a certainty

    Grace Moore|Mar 21, 2024

A grant established by the Wyoming Business Council through the Community Facilities Rehabilitation Grant Program was touted by those with whom town officials and staff worked on it as a sure thing for the Moorcroft Town Center (MTC). Moorcroft Mayor Ben Glenn later said, “Everybody we talked to said it was easy, it was perfect, this is what the grant’s for, you guys are in great shape.” The assurances convinced the council and HDR Engineering’s Heath Turbiville to meet in October of last year to discuss, in detail, what would be done with the...

  • Unstable soil delays splash pad project

    Grace Moore|Mar 21, 2024

The plan for a splash pad at Noonan Park seemed, for a time, stymied due to unstable soil. But after researching the best approach to the problem, HDR Engineering was able to bring a solution to Moorcroft’s council involving smaller slabs of concrete. The group discussed this possible answer at length at a recent workshop and are now ready to proceed with two smaller pads, “So they can float if they need to instead of breaking or cracking,” Mayor Ben Glenn stated Monday. However, the anticipated grand opening of the attraction that had been...

With fire season already underway, Crook County is now under burn restrictions. Fire Warden Charlie Harrison requested the restrictions be put in place last week, telling the county commissioners that more Wyoming acres burned in February than in the entirety of 2023. While the county has had a little moisture recently, in some places there was "barely any", he said, and temperatures are still above average. "There's no good news in the forecast," he said. The last of six water meters placed a year ago to segregate individual apartments within the 12-plex on North Little Horn Avenue were removed last Thursday. About a year ago, Moorcroft's council chose to have six more meters installed in addition to the existing six to be connected when they passed an ordinance regarding billing individual tenants for utilities in town limits. This change of law has not been addressed since then and a vehicle wheel recently fell into a pit, destroying one of...

    Grace Moore|Mar 14, 2024

Freedom Holdings’ Greg Cottrell, partner in the C-Bar Estates development, is asking again for a temporary Certificate of Occupancy (CO) before the infrastructure is complete. “At that point, the town will take it over with a warranty,” Pine Haven Mayor Karla Brandenburg explained at a recent workshop. “They want us to give one and keep asking us about that…They can’t sell any of those lots until they get a CO.” Due to the ongoing problems the town has faced with the company, she and the council have been careful not to allow any premature rel...

  • Uncooperative winter

    Sarah Pridgeon|Mar 7, 2024

There's not much chance of flooding this spring, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). The county continues to slide into drought conditions after a winter that brought little snow. The flood outlook summary for this spring is below average across all of northeastern Wyoming and western South Dakota. This is the time of year for ice cover on streams, rivers and lakes to melt and for ice-jam flooding to potentially occur. Flooding from snowmelt on the plains typically takes place betwe...

Ordinance 1-2024 was approved on the third reading last week to the consternation of Councilman Dale Petersen, who said, “I’m still concerned; with this ordinance, they’re still able to put a dog kennel in town. We had the fire trucks trying to keep up so Dave [Elliott] and [I] had to come in and get all the town wells running,” he said. “We were at high capacity, trying to keep up with the fire trucks. Grace Moore|Mar 7, 2024

The Pine Haven Council has become concerned that, throughout recent years, people who either do not understand how the town slash pile works or simply do not care have dumped items not allowed into the municipal slash pile when the public works shop is not attended. Pine Haven's fire chief, who manages the annual burning of the debris, explained, "The idea behind the slash pile is so residents can keep their property trimmed up and clear of pine needles.
