    Cary Littlejohn, Gillette News Record|Sep 9, 2021

Editor's Note: the following story was originally published by the Gillette News Record about Moorcroft's oldest living resident, Bill Hughes, who turns 100 on Wednesday, September 8. Recalling stories of his father's service during World War II, Doug Hughes begins with a peculiar memory. "He said they bombed a lot of whales," he said. He then lets out a sharp, abbreviated laugh, a single "Ha!" as if he couldn't believe the absurdity of the whole thing even as he said it. "He" was his father,...

  • Timing frustrates landfill inspection

    Grace Moore|Sep 2, 2021

The Moorcroft landfill was visited by a Department of Environmental Quality inspector last month and, as chance would have it, their arrival coincided with an enlarged "face" or open working area. This enlargement was approximately twice the size of the accepted 50-75 feet due to the crew opening the space to level low spots and points eaten by a recent fire. The fire was caused by combustion of yard waste mixed in the household garbage. "It's a bad deal," Public Works Director Cory Allison said...

Glenn's son Patrick, Kurtis Elliot, Hayden Ambende and James Long worked diligently, starting with the slides before taking care of the restroom and finishing with the merry-go-round. As the boys worked, Glenn...

  • Kuhl pleads not guilty

    Sarah Pridgeon|Sep 2, 2021

At an arraignment hearing last week, County Treasurer Mary Kuhl was asked how she intends to plead to the felony and three misdemeanors she has been charged with. “Not guilty, your honor,” she repeated four times. This plea gives Kuhl the right to a public jury trial, said Judge Stuart S. Healy III, who presided over the hearing and said he will now enter a criminal case management order. The date of Kuhl’s trial was not set, though the judge stated that the order kickstarts a number of deadlines on both sides and a date for her pre-t...
