    Grace Moore|Sep 8, 2022

Black Hills Bentonite LLC of Casper, WY has asked for a permit to mine bentonite a couple miles south of Pine Haven. At last week's public meeting of Pine Haven Council, residents and Land Quality Division of the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) representatives entertained approximately 60 guests from Pine Haven and the surrounding area to discuss concerns about the mining process. Mayor Karla Brandenburg later noted, "All who spoke objected to the mine being built in the area it is...

  • Delayed, not abandoned

    Grace Moore|Sep 8, 2022

Pine Haven’s town council plans to apply for a Business Ready Grant in the new year to enable the town to build the infrastructure for a business park and subsequent fire hall. According to Mayor Karla Brandenburg, along with this main funding they are actively seeking “other avenues for grants for this project”. The Wyoming Business Council’s Business Ready Grant has specific prerequisites, though, one of which is the donation of the land that will hold the infrastructure and on which the structures are to be built. The present land owners...

    Sarah Pridgeon|Sep 8, 2022

The number of registered voters in Crook County took a significant leap upwards this year, according to the official tallies from August’s primary election. This year, on the other hand, 4558 people were registered to vote in the county on election day – an increase of 415 people, or 10%. On election day itself, Crook County gained 205 new voters. Unsurprisingly, the number of ballots that were cast for...

  • Old Settlers' Picnic planned for Sept. 25

    Sep 8, 2022

A place takes on meaning for people when they become attached to it. The sights, sounds and smells make a powerful imprint on our memories; they help us connect to an area. We develop a sense of place based on our experiences, and the shared culture and folklore associated with those experiences. Many residents of the Black Hills region identify with Devils Tower because of the sense of place that has been cultivated by using the land as a gathering spot for many generations.
