  • Woman arrested for child abuse, assault

    A Moorcroft woman has been arrested on 16 separate counts of child abuse as well as one of aggravated assault and battery. Karey Hedlund's alleged victims accuse her of years of mental and physical abuse ranging from locking them in cages to withholding meals. According to reports from a Crook County Sheriff's Office deputy, an investigation was launched at the beginning of June into a report of "abusive and neglectful behavior" by Hedlund towards some of her adopted children.   • Timing frustrates landfill inspection

    The Moorcroft landfill was visited by a Department of Environmental Quality inspector last month and, as chance would have it, their arrival coincided with an enlarged "face" or open working area. This enlargement was approximately twice the size of the accepted 50-75 feet due to the crew opening the space to level low spots and points eaten by a recent fire.     Two weeks ago, the new Noonan Park playground equipment was left in a mess, as well as the bathroom toilets, doors and sinks. The following Friday, Councilman Ben Glenn and four of his young associates converged with hoses, rags, dish soap and enthusiasm to clean the mess left behind.     At an arraignment hearing last week, County Treasurer Mary Kuhl was asked how she intends to plead to the felony and three misdemeanors she has been charged with. “Not guilty, your honor,” she repeated four times. This plea gives Kuhl the right to a public jury trial, said Judge Stuart S. Healy III, who presided over the hearing and said he will now enter a criminal case management order.     Mary Ann Boe (Short) of Spearfish, South Dakota, died peacefully at her daughter's home in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, a year ago on August 13, 2020, at the age of 93. She was a loving, devoted wife to her husband and loving and supportive mom to her children, especially cherished her grandchildren and great grandchildren and she was always happy to cuddle a baby.
