There's not much chance of flooding this spring, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). The county continues to slide into drought conditions after a winter that brought little snow. The flood outlook summary for this spring is below average across all of northeastern Wyoming and western South Dakota. This is the time of year for ice cover on streams, rivers and lakes to melt and for ice-jam flooding to potentially occur. Flooding from snowmelt on the plains typically takes place betwe...
A resident moving into town from out of state recently requested a variance to install a commercial dog kennel, initiating an amendment to the existing ordinance governing animals and fowl withing Moorcroft town limits. Ordinance 1-2024 was approved on the third reading last week to the consternation of Councilman Dale Petersen, who said, “I’m still concerned; with this ordinance, they’re still able to put a dog kennel in town. I’m concerned about the impact and what that’s going to mean for those residents in that area.” The adjusted la...
Moorcroft Public Works Director Cory Allison reported a problem with the town-owned generator to the council after the January 25 grass fire that devoured around 1000 acres east of town. The department was providing water to the fire trucks as they were emptied on the site. “We lost power out there. We had the fire trucks trying to keep up so Dave [Elliott] and [I] had to come in and get all the town wells running,” he said. “We were at high capacity, trying to keep up with the fire trucks. We did keep up with them, but with our generator being...
The Pine Haven Council has become concerned that, throughout recent years, people who either do not understand how the town slash pile works or simply do not care have dumped items not allowed into the municipal slash pile when the public works shop is not attended. Pine Haven's fire chief, who manages the annual burning of the debris, explained, "The idea behind the slash pile is so residents can keep their property trimmed up and clear of pine needles. It wasn't meant for large tree, stump,...
The Wyoming Legislature is heading into the fourth and final week of the Budget Session. The biggest lift is still ahead: reaching a budget agreement between the House and Senate. After both chambers finalized our respective budgets at the end of week two, it became clear that there are big differences between the two bills – both in dollar value and priorities. The House and Senate bills are separated by about $1.1 billion, the largest divide that I have seen during my time in the L...

GILLETTE — The Campbell County Recreation Center is one of the county’s busiest facilities, with hundreds of thousands of visits each year. But earlier in February, Rec Center staff members were faced with a situation they’d never dealt with before, and the Campbell County Attorney’s Office and human resources department are working on a solution. At the Parks and Recreation Board’s quarterly meeting with commissioners Monday, Commission Chair Del Shelstad said an adult at the Rec Center reported seeing a transgender woman in the women’s l...
The University of Wyoming Extension has released a free online course on how to use electric pressure cookers to prepare healthy, inexpensive meals. "Today, food costs are more expensive and everyone's budgets are tighter," says Kali McCrackin Goodenough, manager of UW Extension's Cent$ible Nutrition Program (CNP). "Using an electric pressure cooker can decrease the amount of active time to cook dinner, which may mean cooking from scratch more often. It can also be less expensive than buying fas...
March is Women’s History Month — a time to focus not just on the past, but also on the challenges women continue to face in the 21st century. At Social Security, we provide vital benefits and financial protection for women. Nearly 55% of people receiving Social Security benefits are women. Today, more women work, pay Social Security taxes and earn credit toward monthly retirement income than at any other time in our nation’s history. Women have longer average life expectancies and tend to live more years in retirement than men. This means women...

While the weekend did not end like the team hoped it would, Lady Wolves basketball coach Matthew Albertson says the girls played their hearts out. “Game one paired us with a strong Douglas team and they did not back down. Douglas is a very athletic group and they have some length, being a somewhat taller team,” he says. “This caused fits for us, but one of their strengths (full court pressure) the girls handled well for the most part.” The second game was Newcastle – a familiar foe for the Wolves. “This team we know very well and it was a fo...
The basketball season ended at Regionals for the boys’ team. Coach Nick Redden commends his team for the improvement they showed as the season progressed. “Any time a season ends abruptly, like it did at Regionals, you miss it. We had a season where you could take all 13 guys and compare them from the first game to the last game and see improvement that is rarely seen,” he says. “I had four amazing seniors and nine other guys who stepped up every day. You never had a practice when you had to ask them to work harder because that was just th...

JACKSON — Amid the typical tax season stress, residents are also tasked with remaining vigilant when it comes to cybercrime. Don’t respond to emails or text messages about your refund, the Federal Trade Commission said. IRS impersonators want to dupe people into forking over sensitive information this tax season. Fake emails and text messages about “tax refunds” are being sent, the FTC said, with links the scammer is hoping residents will click on. The links may help the impersonator steal your identity or put malware on your phone or compute...
